Topic: Enhancing Data Security in the Public Cloud: The Role of Confidential Computing
Public cloud is continuing to become more important. However, many enterprises and government organizations are still reluctant to utilize the public cloud for sensitive or regulated data and continue to work in private data centers. This is mainly due to security and privacy concerns whilst using cloud services, like rogue administrators, data leakage, and potential software vulnerabilities. Many advancements have been made to protect data in transit and data at rest, most of these have involved encryption, but data has remained vulnerable during processing.
Confidential Computing delivers a technology that allows data to be protected whilst its being processed by running that workload’s in an Intel-based, hardware-protected Trusted Execution Environment or TEE. This TEE is separated from the cloud providers privileged software stack (e.g., hypervisor, host OS, and firmware), as well as its administrators, providing the data owner a private computation area where the cloud provider can neither influence or observe the computation. Intel and Thales are partnering together to enhance the Confidential Computing capabilities in the cloud by adding integrity capabilities using Confidential Computing attestation techniques allowing data owners to attest to the integrity of the cloud environment before and during processing.
